Information System

Term

An information system (IS) is the set of social and technical resources used to collect, store, process and distribute information within an organisation.

An information system (IS) is the set of social and technical resources used to collect, store, process and distribute information within an organisation.

An IS is therefore made up of two sub-systems:
- A social sub-system: the human organisation acting within the information system.
- A technical sub-system: the technological equipment (hardware, software and networks).

Technological innovation, by bringing automation and dematerialisation, gradually transforms these services. Automation replaces the social sub-system; dematerialisation replaces the technical sub-system.
