JavaScript was created in 1995 by Brendan Eich and embedded in the Netscape Navigator browser. It is a scripting language primarily used to build interactive web pages and, as such, is an essential part of web applications.

Alongside HTML and CSS, JavaScript is at the heart of the languages used by web developers. The vast majority of websites use it, and most browsers ship a JavaScript engine to run it. JavaScript is also used server-side, with runtimes such as Node.js or Deno.
