SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) is a proprietary methodological framework aimed at applying agile principles at the scale of large organisations, where dozens to hundreds of teams work on the same product portfolio.
It defines multiple levels (team, programme, portfolio, large solution), a central event — the quarterly PI Planning that synchronises dozens of teams — and a set of roles (Release Train Engineer, Product Manager, System Architect…).
It is the most widely deployed scaling framework in large groups (banks, telcos, industry), but also the most criticised by the agile community for its weight and its distance from the Agile Manifesto's spirit. Alternatives include LeSS, the Spotify Model and the simple « scrum of scrums ».
