Kanban

Methodology

Kanban — often pictured as three columns « To do », « Doing » and « Done » filled with coloured sticky notes — is a working method, or rather (like Scrum) a framework.

Kanban — often pictured as three columns « To do », « Doing » and « Done » filled with coloured sticky notes — is a working method, or rather (like Scrum) a framework.

It was conceptualised in 1950 by Taiichi Ōno, an industrial engineer at Toyota, to optimise car manufacturing.

Now widely used in software development, it aims to avoid overproduction in industry — and therefore useless code in development — to reduce costs and lead times. Very visual, it also offers a simple read on project progress.
