Forward Deployed Engineer / FDE
Forward Deployed Engineer / FDE = the engineer embedded at the client
The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer sent to the client to connect their company's platform to that client's real-world uses: data, existing systems, business processes.
The role was popularized by Palantir, then adopted by many publishers of complex software and AI. The FDE really writes code: connectors, data pipelines, custom applications, prompts and agents. But they do so in direct contact with the client's teams, whose business and constraints they understand. They bring what they learn in the field back to the product.
It is neither a consultant making slides, nor an IT services developer placed on contract, nor a presales engineer. It is a product engineer working as close as possible to the value created for the client.
Why it matters when hiring
Companies hire FDEs when the product is powerful but requires real integration work to deliver value, often after the first enterprise customers. The target profile combines a real coding level, ease with business stakeholders and tolerance for ambiguity. The strong signal: a career that alternates between product and client contact, with delivered results. The trap: hiring a consultant who no longer codes.
