The AI Engineer is a tech profile that emerged with the rise of generative AI. They design and deploy applications that use LLMs, vision models or autonomous agents.

Unlike a Machine Learning Engineer, who trains models, the AI Engineer mostly works with pre-trained models (Claude, GPT, Mistral, Llama…) and assembles them using techniques such as RAG, prompt engineering, agent orchestration, evaluation and AI observability.

They typically work in Python or TypeScript, with frameworks like LangChain, LlamaIndex or the Anthropic / OpenAI SDKs, and with vector databases (Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate). It is one of the most sought-after roles in 2026.
