The Prompt Engineer is a profile that emerged with the rise of LLMs, whose job is to design, test and optimise the prompts — the instructions given to generative AI models — to obtain reliable, safe and reproducible results in a given product context.
The role has evolved: in 2026, it is rarely a full-time position in a product team, but rather a skill embedded in broader roles (AI Engineer, AI Product Manager, AI Designer). It combines an understanding of LLMs, product sensibility, experimentation rigour (prompt A/B testing, evals) and writing ability.
