A PWA (Progressive Web App) is a web application that leverages modern Web standards to offer an experience close to a native app: installation on the home screen, offline operation through a service worker, push notifications, access to certain sensors.

PWAs are distributed via the Web (a URL) rather than through app stores, which simplifies deployment and removes installation and review friction. They run on any device with a compatible browser.

The model is mature in 2026, with solid support on Android and steady catch-up on iOS. Twitter, Spotify, Pinterest, Starbucks and Uber have all rolled out PWAs alongside their native apps.
