A FinOps Engineer (or FinOps Practitioner) tracks cloud spend by team and by product, identifies waste (oversized instances, forgotten resources, wrong service choices), sets up reserved instances and savings plans, and arbitrates between cost, performance and reliability.
The FinOps Foundation, hosted by the Linux Foundation, formalises best practices. The role is exploding in 2026 with the rise of AI- and storage-related costs.
