Copilot

TechTool

A copilot is an AI-powered software assistant that suggests actions, content or code to a user in real time — without replacing them.

A copilot is an AI-powered software assistant that suggests actions, content or code to a user in real time — without replacing them.

The term was popularised by GitHub Copilot, launched in 2021, which suggests code in the IDE. Microsoft has since extended the brand across its entire product line (Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot Workspace, Copilot Studio…). Other players offer their own equivalents: Cursor, Windsurf, Tabnine, Codeium, Claude Code, JetBrains AI Assistant.

Not to be confused with an autonomous agent: a copilot proposes, the human validates at each step.
